Types of Plumbing Systems used in Buildings

Plumbing systems are used in all types of buildings for supplying water for human use and for getting rid of wastes. Plumbing systems therefore form a major part of every building and the system must be carefully laid down so that it does not develop problems with use. Plumbing systems of buildings typically include water distribution pipes, fixture and fixture traps, waste, soil and vent pipes, drain and sewer, storm drainage system with connected devices and various appliances connected to the plumbing system.

Plumbing systems in buildings consist of an underground tank which is supplied water via the water department supply lines. From this tank, with the help of pipes and piping distribution system, the water is provided to tanks overhead. From these overhead tanks, water reaches buildings due to gravity. In some cases, the overhead tanks can be eliminated as well where the water is supplied directly to the various water outlets in buildings.

The plumbing systems used in buildings can be categorized into:

  • Single stack systems: This is the simplest form of plumbing system that can be used in buildings. This system of pipes carries waste water from wash basins, bathrooms, sinks and foul matters from water closets. This system of pipes is connected to a single final pipe. This type of system makes use of several traps.
  • Partially vented single stack systems: This plumbing system is a type of single stack system that is provided with ventilation to the traps of water closet. The traps of wash basins and sinks are not connected to the vent pipe rather vents are provided in these pipes.
  • One pipe system: This type of a plumbing system makes use of a single stack system where the final pipe receives connections from all traps. However, this does not mean that the final pipe has a single trap of closets. In fact, there are many trap closets; usually as many traps as the number of sinks and wash basins.
  • Two pipe systems: This type of plumbing system makes use of separate pipes to connect water closets and for discharges from sinks, wash basins, bathrooms etc. The two pipes of such a system are separately ventilated so that the plumbing system can function in the right manner. This type of system is perfect for a multi-storied building.

The plumbing systems may need repair and maintenance from time to time so that they can function in the right manner. The repair and maintenance of plumbing systems must be done by professional plumbers who have the requisite knowledge and skills to perform the task.
